Corrosion Protection

Protecting Offshore Structures From the Inside Out

Offshore steel structures are permanently exposed to seawater, UV radiation and constant mechanical stress. Standard corrosion protection coatings are designed to withstand these environmental conditions, but they are not designed to withstand repeated mechanical impact.

Certain sections of offshore foundations, such as boat landings, are exposed to significantly higher mechanical loads than the rest of the structure. Every vessel approach and every push-on manoeuvre transfers force directly onto the coated surface. Over time, this mechanical stress damages the underlying corrosion protection, leading to repair work shortly after installation and repeatedly throughout the lifetime of the plant.

The Protector

Reliable Corrosion Protection for Offshore and Marine Structures

The Protector is a composite protection system developed to prevent corrosion damage to coated steel structures caused by mechanical impact, abrasion and environmental exposure. It is designed for use in demanding industrial, marine and offshore environments, where protective coating systems are exposed to continuous mechanical wear.

By adding a durable, impact-resistant layer above the existing coating system, The Protector eliminates mechanical stress on the corrosion protection itself, reducing the need for maintenance and repair over the lifetime of the structure.

Together with its 2K-PUR adhesive, The Protector itself constitutes a certified corrosion protection system. This means it does not necessarily require an underlying coating system to be installed beforehand: The Protector can also be applied directly to bare steel.

Applications

Key Applications of The Protector

Boat Landing Protection

Protection of boat landings against coating damage caused by repeated contact with vessel fenders. Maintains structural integrity in one of the most exposed areas of an offshore structure.

New-Build Corrosion Protection

Integration of The Protector during the fabrication phase as part of the overall corrosion protection system, providing additional impact resistance from the outset.

Retrofit and Repair

Installation on existing structures as a repair, refurbishment or preventive maintenance measure, extending the service life of structures already exposed to mechanical wear.

Our Solutions

Basalt-Based Composite Engineered for Offshore Conditions

The Protector is based on basalt fibre technology. Basalt is non-biodegradable, resistant to temperatures from -260°C to 800°C, 100% UV-stable and highly resistant to seawater, making it well suited for permanent exposure in offshore environments.

The Protector consists of a matrix of 7 to 10 layers of basalt and glass fibre embedded in vinyl ester resin. The overall thickness depends on the number of layers used, and the outer surface can be manufactured smooth or textured depending on project requirements. The upper and front edges are chamfered, reducing the contact area exposed to shear forces from vessel fenders or other mechanical impacts. During installation, a 2K-PUR adhesive system bonds The Protector permanently to the prepared substrate.

Tested Performance

Validated Under Real Offshore Conditions

The Protector is tested against the mechanical and environmental conditions it will face in operation. Simulated crew transfer vessel landings of 50 kN, applied over more than 50,000 cycles, and continuous sandstorm bombardment at 80 m/s confirm its resistance to repeated mechanical impact and abrasion.

Bonded units have been tested to failure under static shear loads of approximately 560 t/m² (5.6 N/mm²), and dynamic testing under repeated cyclical shear loading showed no deformation after 51,000 load cycles. Independent long-term corrosion testing, together with more than five years of real-life exposure on installed structures, confirms only minimal wear after prolonged offshore operation.

The added surface roughness of The Protector also improves crew safety: it increases grip during vessel push-on manoeuvres, reducing the power needed to hold position and allowing for a safer step-over compared to conventional coatings.

A Patented Solution, Continuously Improved

The Protector is a patented Jaeger Maritime Solutions development. Its design has been continuously refined based on extensive testing and real-world offshore experience, ensuring reliable performance under the demanding conditions of the offshore wind industry.

Since its first offshore installation in 2017, The Protector has been deployed on boat landings across numerous offshore wind farms, both on- and offshore, with a growing track record confirming its long-term durability. Operators consistently report reduced maintenance requirements, fewer repair projects and increased working days due to safer and more reliable vessel access.

Jaeger Maritime Solutions continues to develop and refine The Protector, drawing on practical project experience to improve installation efficiency, extend its range of applications and adapt the system to new offshore requirements.
